EARLY LIFE[EDIT]
Television[edit]
Tanna came into limelight with
Balaji Telefilms' popular soap opera on
Star Plus,
Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi[6] (July 2000 - November 2008), and is claimed for her fun character, Indu. The show became one of the most popular shows of all time in Indian television history, making Tanna a household name.
[7] According to a report published by the
BBC, "In millions of homes across the country, families reorganised their daily routines to ensure they didn't miss out on the show."
[8]
Tanna worked as the lead female actress for the TV series
Kkoi Dil Mein Hai (December 2003 - February 2005) on Sony as Krutika. Produced by Balaji Telefilms, the show revolved around the lives of two best friends - Krutika and Kajal, who, in spite of their severe socio-economic differences, are inseparable. Things turn ugly when Krutika marries Kajal's ex-boyfriend, and the two best friends now turn rivals smitten with jealousy and competition.
[10] Tanna signed up with project while still working for Kynki Saas bhi kabhi bahu thi, as her role in Kyunki was not that of a major character. Moreover,
Kkoi Dil Mein Hai was a weekly show.
[10]
She made a guest appearance in
UTV's fantasy TV series,
Shararat (November 2004 - April 2009), an adaptation of the American show
Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. She acted in the episode 30 of the show.
She played the lead character Palak in TV series
Paalkhi (June 2005 - April 2006) on
Zee TV comprising 180 episodes. She played the role of an
NRI from
London who visits Mumbai and falls in love with a local boy.
Tanna worked for the TV program
Ek Ladki Anjaani Si on Sony (November 2005 - September 2007) playing the negative character Ayesha.
[11]
BR Films signed her up for their drama TV series,
Viraasat (June 2006 - July 2007), that was originally started airing on Star Plus, but was later moved to
Star One.
[12] She played the role of Natasha, a secretary of a lead character played by Rohit Roy.
[14] Tanna said in an interview, "Like
Bipasha Basu in
Corporate, I have worn jackets and trousers (for this role).”
[15]
About the roles and image influencing her career, she expressed in an October 2006 interview, "I would rather do interesting cameos. They offer more in scope of varied emotions. And I am trying my level best to break free from the cute image that I have acquired with
Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. People still know me as Indu. It is a task to break free from an image."
[11]
Tanna participated in stage-based comedy TV series
Comedy Circus Season 1 that started in June 2007 on Sony.
[16] She later came back in
Comedy Circus Mahasangram in February 2010.
[17]
She has also acted in TV production for children,
Baal Veer (October 2012 – present), on
SAB TV playing the role of Rani Pari. However, she quit the show in February 2013
[24] and was replaced by
Shruti Seth.
Tanna is currently a contestant on a celebrity reality TV show,
Bigg Boss 8, on
Colors, which started airing in September 2014. The show is based on a format originally created by the
Dutch-based
Endemol's
Big Brother,
[25] where celebrities live in a large house, isolated from the world and vie for a cash prize towards the end of the show by avoiding eliminations every week. Before entering the house, she told PTI in an interview, "I don't have any particular strategy. I think strategies don't work in the house. My biggest concern is people misunderstanding me. I don't like it when people poke me in the wrong way and if in the show someone ticks me off then that person is going to get it back from me."
[26] About the most difficult part about staying in the house, she told Colors, that it would be living without her mother and her phone.
[3]
Theater[edit]
In September 2006, Tanna made her theater debut with the
Hinglish farce/romantic comedy
Perfect Wedding, directed by Vandana Sajnani. The work was adapted from Robin Howdon's British play of the same name, but the script and content was Indianised with colloquial dialects. About her role of Rachel, Tanna said, "I play this half-Gujarati-half-Catholic girl, who always dreamt of having a perfect church wedding, but the various twists and turns leads to it becoming a laugh riot." About her exposure to theater, she explained, "I will be recognised as an actor, because in a play there are no retakes. Making people laugh is seriously tough."
[12][27]
Continuing her theater work with Vandana Sajnani, Tanna next performed in the comedy
Knotty Affair in 2007 and elaborated, "I play a modern, smart chic who knows how to play her cards well. I play Lila, who divorces her husband and gets married to an older colonel officer."
[28]
Tanna's second film was a
Kannada language movie,
I Am Sorry Mathe Banni Preethsona, which was released in June 2011. Tanna played the lead actress role of Chethana, who marries
Prem Kumar. The film is based on the theme of suspicion, sanctity and compulsions in the relationship of a happily married couple.
[29] However, Tanna was upset with the director Ravindra H P Das before the release and called a press conference and commented, "I'm really hurt and upset with the way the promotions are going because, as far as I know, I'm the main lead in the film.. I was not invited for the first press conference of the film.. I'm not there in the hoardings, my pictures are not given to the media. Being a lead, and being treated like this is not right.. I just want to know from my director that am I that bad or am I not talented that that you're not promoting me?"
[30]
In September 2013, she tasted her first commercial Bollywood success with her third film,
Grand Masti, a Bollywood sex comedy, and a sequel to April 2004 film,
Masti. The film crossed the box office collections of Rs 100 crore in just 23 days of its release, making it the first Hindi adult comedy film to cross this mark in record days.
[31] She played the role of Unatti,
Vivek Oberoi's wife, and worked alongside actors
Riteish Deshmukh,
Aftab Shivdasani,
Sonalee Kulkarni and
Manjari Fadnis. About her experience working on the film, she said in an interview, "I think it was a lot of fun because I, myself am a fun girl, so I like people have a great sense of humor on the sets. My co-actors and Riteish were very bitchy and humorous so I really loved working with them. I had a gala, ball of a time on the sets."
[32]
Tanna's fourth film,
Tina and Lolo, is under pipeline. The film stars Tanna in the lead role, along with the former pornographic actress,
Sunny Leone, and also features
Deepak Tijori and
Taaha Shah. Tanna's character was earlier offered to
Minissha Lamba, but Lamba opted out as the script required her kissing Sunny Leone. About her role, Tanna explained, "I am working on my fitness, since the character requires me to do hardcore action sequences like riding bikes, jumping from heights, flying in the air with the help of ropes, etc" and described the movie as more like a
Charlie's Angelsflick.
[33]
Music video[edit]
Tanna acted in
Mikey McCleary's (aka Bartender) remix music video of the 1960 hit track
Khoya Khoya Chand in 2011. She portrays a vampire in the music video. The track is part of the album
Shaitan - Shaken, not stirred, with vocals by
Suman Sridhar.
[34]
TV Commercials[edit]
Tanna has acted in several television advertisements, including for
Stayfree,
Lifebuoy and
Nirma.
[35] She has also been featured in the underwear commercial of Rupa Frontline.
[36]
PERSONAL LIFE AND OTHER ACTIVITIES[EDIT]

Mika's birthday party
About her dancing skills, she told the media, "I'm not a trained dancer, but I learnt
Bharatanatyam at school for 3-4 years when I was young, so in a way, I'm trained in
classical dancing."
[37]
Tanna divulged in an October 2013 interview that she loves hosting TV shows and would like to work for some interesting non-fiction shows in that capacity.
[38]
In September 2012, media reports emerged hinting that Tanna is dating model Hanif Hilal,
[39] and later indicated that the two eventually broke up in June 2013.
[40]Earlier, Tanna has also been linked to music composer and singer, Bappa Lahiri,
[39]who is the son of popular music director-singer
Bappi Lahiri.
Media reports are currently suggesting that Tanna is presently in a relationship with a Mumbai based nightclub owner and restaurateur, Rushabh Choksi.
