A retirement plan for Mumbai's horses?
Here's an undiluted account of the city life of horses
This was a trip to the stallions beyond the confines of the Mahalaxmi Race Course, the high profile polo matches, and the prim and propah image of the Victorian carriages. Horses quite dominate the minds and space in the other side of the town too.
Home to the horses the celebs ride...
Hrithik's stallion in Jodha Akbar lives in a 4,000 square metre stable in Goregaon, on the Film City Road that belongs to the Verma Brothers (action director Tinu Verma and his brothers Bhikoo, Pappu and Narendra). In fact horses from here are not new to giving celebrities a ride. Says Pappu Verma, "Most of the horses used for shoots are from our stable." He favours the Punjab and Marwari breed to the thorough bred (English) horses. "These breeds are hardworking, and ideal for shoots, as they are not moody."
Their father BP Verma set up the stable in 1952. Apart from providing horses for film shoots, marriages, and religious functions, the stable is also a training ground for amateur riding enthusiasts.
Horses from here also trot for students of the Jankidevi Public School in Andheri, thanks to Narendra Verma, who's the school's chairman. He shares, "Horse riding is an expensive sport. It's a royal hobby, and can give a lot of confidence. So, I wanted to give this facility to my students." The school charges an additional training fee per month for the sport.
Once, a parking lot for horses
Seven Bungalows also had a horse riding school some years ago. Former airhostess, Reshma Kaur actually owned horses and would 'park' them in her building compound. In fact, the Picnic Cottage bus stop was known as the Ghode wala bus stop in those days. Going through hard times, this Pahadi lady started the Chhatrapati Horse Riding Educational Academy 22 years ago, and the beach next door was her riding place. Reshma shares, "I mostly had actors as my students. I trained Rupa Ganguly (who played Draupadi in the old 'Mahabharat' series), and Chandraprakash Dwivedi." Her son, Vivekanand Athanikar recollects, "We would get up at 4 O' Clock to go looking for horses, as mom never believed in tying them up for the night."
Stallion's might, his pride
For most actors, horse riding is usually incidental to enacting a scene. But Randeep Hooda scores differently. The 'Risk' and 'D' actor was initiated to the reins in school, and got back to riding two years ago, after a gap of 15 years. His passion for horses is unmatched. He travels all the way from Versova to Mahalaxmi almost every day and has a personal groom for each of his army-bred horses. His favourite is a six-year-old Hanoverian, Ranji. "He's named after Maharaja Ranjit Singh, as he has only one eye like the Maharaja. He jumps beautifully, all I have to do is whistle for my baby and he comes to me from anywhere in the world."
Randeep's rugged appeal corresponds with his ideals; there's no place for fake chivalry, at least when it comes to his horses. "I am not into any sort of pleasure riding, but equestrian sport. My horses are not available to anyone to mount on them just for kicks." He has a record that speaks for him. He won the best upcoming rider of the year on his comeback and has also won medals for show jumping.
'State'in riding facts
Chairman of the Maharashtra Equestrian Association (MEA), Neeta Nihalani has seen Randeep perform in Delhi, and thinks Randeep's very good. "One can see a lot of energy in him." Wife of filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani, Neeta has been actively involved in arranging camps for children. "It's a very personal passion," she says.
"I have been a rider from childhood. It came to me from my father who was a mounted British officer." Both her sons, Vishal (also the producer of 'Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost') and Chirag, have taken after their mother. "Vicky (Vishal) plays Polo and Chirag is into show jumping."
At various times, she has held camps at the Cross Maidan, Juhu Bharat Scouts and Guides Ground near the Hare Rama Hare Krishna temple, Gyan Ashram in Andheri East, Bandra YMCAand the SRP ground in Borivali. These camps concentrate more on initiating youngsters to horses to promote the interest of equestrian sport, and spot and develop talent. The course on horse riding includes theory and basic grooming techniques for horse owners and riders, she informs.
Sadly, typical of any government-aided institution, the budget allotted to MEA is not sufficient, and Neeta ends up spending a lot from her pocket. "But I am not complaining," she says, "As I love what I am doing." However, she does admit some difficulty in getting sponsors. "Sponsors prefer the much-hyped polo than equestrian sport."
Reining victory
Neeta's prodigy, 22-year-old Atil Shah's fascination for horses translated into a silver medal in show jumping at the All India/Public Schools and Open Equestrian Championships in Nashik in 2002 and more recently, he also won a trophy for the same category in 2007 in the Mumbai City Equestrian Champion held that SRP. A Borivali resident, Atil was always fascinated with horses. Most of his training happened in Matheran. He rues of the lack for dedicated space for horse riding in the city.
For the love of horses..
Like many, Atil remembers the adrenaline rush seeing horses at Juhu Beach as a kid, but doesn't miss their absence. "The kind of treatment they are given, they better not be there," he says voicing concern for the animal. The whip has no place in his relationship with horses, "We try to train ourselves, rather than train the horse."
Though he trades in horses, even Pappu Verma is all praise and supportive of PETA and calls their crusade for 'horses off the streets' absolutely fair. "Animals shouldn't be tortured in anyway. In the last 5-6 years, stunts via horses on screen have also been stopped." He points, "Our concrete roads are very risky for the rider and horse. The surface is slippery for horse's metal shoe."
Retirement plan for your horse
NG Jayasimha of PETA clears the air, particularly of their opposition to the Victorian carriages, and tongas operating in Mumbai, amidst the mad traffic. "We don't need such a vintage cultural influence," he states. "It's not an easy life to be a Victoria carriage pulling horse. Horses have a better hearing capacity than us. Imagine what they go through with all the honking on the roads, which is maddening enough for us!"
Most of these race horses are well kept and fed high protein diet, but once they are old or can't compete, they are either shot or auctioned to street merchants where they can hardly survive. They are over-worked, kept in shady places and are given a meagre diet, he says. "In that case it's better if these horses are put to sleep. At least they will have better deaths than their lives on streets. It's sad that none of these race clubs have any retirement plans for their horses, in spite of them being so rich. We, at PETA would be more than happy to come up with a retirement plan for them."
